School Concerts at the Concerto Köln Lighthouse

When the Concerto Köln team is not on the seven seas, they rehearse and work under a lighthouse in the Ehrenfeld district of Cologne. Here you can bring your class on deck and experience the musicians of Concerto Köln backstage. Sometimes there is a stiff breeze on board but never a stiff atmosphere! And what strange old instruments the musicians play! Instruments made of reed, driftwood, horse hair, felt, fur and gut strings... You can't imagine what a ruckus it makes! Well - as a musical pirate, you can see and hear it from up close. You'll be part of the action when Concerto Köln prepares for a raid, or pardon me, a concert!

Information for Teachers

Concerto Köln has been offering moderated concerts for school classes since 2005. Students from the first grade through to the senior secondary level and from all school types are invited. Concerto Köln would like to specifically reach out to children and youth who so far have had little or no access to classical music. The uncomplicated and direct contact to the musicians helps to diminish initial inhibitions. The aim of the school concerts is to make musical ambiences palpable for young listeners and to sensitize them to the abundance of expression classical music has to offer. Concerto Köln aims to awaken interest and enthusiasm for the exciting field of "early music" by providing age-appropriate background information about the composers and their environment. The school concerts are offered free of charge and take place in the morning in the rehearsal rooms of Concerto Köln, Heliosstraße 15 in Cologne Ehrenfeld. Alexander Scherf and other orchestra members moderate the event. Since demand is high, please register early at  diehoerpiraten@concerto-koeln.de.

The musical pirates on board at school

Concerto Köln would like to offer a two day school project to all interested schools. The project will culminate in a concert in which a musical story will be told. In a hands-on project, the students can take part in several different activities and/or make music with the Ensemble Concerto Köln. Suitable teaching materials will be made available in advance. The first day of the project involves a workshop. Two to three musicians visit the class, present the instruments of the orchestra, bring instruments to try out and prepare the hands-on activity. A second day will see the entire Concerto Köln ensemble presenting the project together with the students in a school concert.

The realization and the scope of this project depend on the availability of funds from the state government as well as on financing through foundations and sponsors. However, we would like to expressly encourage interested schools to apply to Concerto Köln for participation in this project at  diehoerpiraten@concerto-koeln.de

Youth Baroque Orchestra Rhineland

Initiated by the association "Barock in Bonn e.V." in collaboration with the Bonn Music School and the baroque orchestra "Concerto Köln". (conductor: Sylvie Kraus) For some 30 years now, a niche has been established in the concert industry which is now referred to as "historical performance practice" or "early music". This niche specializes in the performance of baroque music with instruments from the 17th and 18th centuries or their replicas. In addition and of equal importance to the instruments is the historical style of playing which has undergone decades of research based on age-old documents. It revolutionized the world of music in the eighties and nineties and has also left its mark on music schools. Students from NRW in particular rank highest in the "early music" category of the "Jugend musiziert" competition. The only thing missing was a youth baroque orchestra that would offer interested and enthusiastic students the opportunity to perform "early music" together.
